Divers down: new sheriff's office team hits the water

When I learned to Scuba dive my first "real dive," after I'd earned my certification in a filthy lake, was in sunny Florida, where the water was crystal clear and warm.

The divers on the Sheriff's Office's new high-altitude dive team put me to shame, with many hitting their first real dive in a muddy river with zero visibility and 35-degree water, looking for the body of a man that disappeared almost 25 years ago.

It was the team's first mission. I asked Sheriff Lillard if I can join. We will see if that happens.

But even if it doesn't it was great learning more about this group of guys and their unique task of performing underwater search, rescue, recovery and investigations at thousands of feet above sea level.

Emergency Manager and dive team member Scott Hawkins sent us some photos of the recent dive and training, and we'll be on the lookout as the team completes more missions around the area.
