Police deal with 'cosmic egg' | From the Newsroom

Be prepared

Happy Monday, and please pardon me as I reiterate a few safety points.

1. Flooding.

Yup; we've got it here in the drought-stricken Southwest. All that snowpack from a better than expected winter is melting quickly and it's coming down. Last week, as reported, the Heritage Estates community off Marine Road got drenched, when the creek behind it overflowed.

All the snowfall through March left ditches a bit soppy, so they could not be cleared and burned as soon as folks had hoped, and that left debris that clogged the works and contributed to the flooding. So: If you live in a floodplain, be prepared, as Montrose County and the city advised here.

2. Sunscreen, sunscreen and, oh yeah — sunscreen.

I went hiking on Sunday. I was excited for the good weather. Unfortunately, I was so excited, I forgot the sunscreen and now am wearing a bright pink ring around my neck. Skin cancer is real and it can be deadly. Don't be like me: Remember to use sunscreen.

3. Inspect those boats.

Zebra and quagga mussels can destroy everything from boat engines to dam works, as well as the food source for native fish. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has been hyper-vigilant in keeping these pests out of state waters, but Highline Lake is infected and last week, rangers intercepted a boat with mussels at Ridgway Reservoir. Do your part: clean and drain your boats.

Still missing Shadow

This kitty is missing from Story Lane/West Oak Grove/6400 roads, going north. Shadow, a long-haired gray-and-white spayed kitty (with splashes of orange) was last seen March 17 and is desperately missed. Her collar (pink) may have come off. I'm making an appeal because I know what it is like to have a beloved cat disappear. If you can help Shadow's person, please call 970-596-6943.
