 | | | Getting to Know Montrose
Getting to know a place is one of life's little joys. It's fascinating, familiarizing yourself with the landscape, learning about a community's people and the issues that they care about. This is what I'm currently doing in Montrose.
I'm new here. Fresh from Florida. The other part of Florida. The part that's more akin to Alabama than Miami. Think cow country, only on the beach.
Just recently, I slipped into the saddle behind the managing editor's desk at the Montrose Daily Press and, as it happens, this is a great vantage point from which to learn about the community of Montrose. Working each day with the paper's editorial team, I help bring the news to you and, in the process, am constantly learning something new about Montrose and the surrounding area.
Last week, I learned more about a rumble with the Montrose County School District, with a faction of parents backing a no-confidence petition aimed at the superintendent. Reporter Rhiannon Bergman laid out the matter in detail, speaking to both the superintendent and the parent who launched the petition.
Also last week, reporter Kylea Henseler brought us a story concerning the rejection by Montrose County of a request by Matt Miles to expand his gravel pit. Nearby property owners balked at the proposed extension — eventually winning the day after a protracted discussion — and Miles, a developer who has contributed significantly to the area's need for more housing, wondered if he was being treated fairly.
Other recent stories that have broadened my understanding and knowledge of the local communities, include one from Lucas Vader, over in Delta, regarding the continued downward spiral at Delta Health, as the CEO followed the CFO out the door and the board of directors fretted about financial solvency and another from Kylea regarding a trio of legislative proposals concerning the reintroduction of wolves in the state. This week, I'm learning about a new distillery in town, as well as about efforts to target LGBTQ-material at the public library.
These enlightening and informative stories are just a few the Montrose Daily Press is diving into right now. It makes me wonder what stories tomorrow brings? It makes me excited about all the stories that lay themselves out upon the page — and online — with each new day in Montrose.
