| | Jobs are everywhere, but where to live? This week I was sent an interesting report from the Colorado Chamber of Commerce, one which showed Montrose near the top of the list when it comes to job vacancies. There's nearly 600 jobs available in the metro area. I started calling city officials and local experts to get their thoughts on who's creating the new jobs, or why employers can't fill them. There were hardly any surprises. Housing in short demand, deterring workers from out of town from taking jobs here? Check. Childcare shortages? We've got 'em. If you're already living in Montrose County and looking for a job, though, you're in luck. Some of our biggest employers, including the City of Montrose, Montrose County School District and Montrose Regional Health combine to offer well over 100 job openings, with various educational requirements. Seasonal jobs are opening up too, and Montrose Mayor Barbara Bynum said the city's public safety sales tax is allowing it to actively recruit new police officers with 0-2 years of experience, who can earn a salary starting at 54k- enough to live almost comfortably in the fancy new Basecamp apartments at Colorado Outdoors. Officials tell us the city is growing, and hopefully that growth will bring with it a little more nightlife- and maybe some public transportation. I might be a dreamer hoping for the first option, but the latter is actually on its way. Keep a lookout for articles covering the rollout of new transportation services between Montrose and Ouray County and Montrose and Delta County. I am, because my summer plans include floating down the Uncompahgre with a beer in hand from Ridgway to Montrose, and I'll need a ride home. Cheers, Kylea Henseler Staff Reporter Want energy?
