MHS students have rhythm

Image
MHS' Advanced Jazz Band has had a groovy year. In January they were one of two schools invited to perform for the Colorado Music Educators Association.

MHS band director Sheridan Loyd said it was "a huge honor" for the school.

And that isn't the band's last note of the year (sick of the puns yet?) The Advanced Jazz Band, along with MHS' Intermediate Jazz Band and Symphonic Band, were in Grand Junction today competing at Colorado West.

I can't wait to hear how it went but, knowing how hard those young musicians work, I know they did great.

In fact, those interested can meet Loyd and her students to ask them how they did in person at their fundraising event tomorrow, April 22.

Starting at 6 p.m. in MHS' auxiliary gym the high school band will be hosting a free swing dance. They do accept donations at the door, and all proceeds support the MHS jazz program.

You can read the full story here.

Look for next week's Arts & Entertainment page to learn about MHS' Winter Guard and their performance entitled 'The Wheel'.

— Have a fantastic (and hopefully warm) weekend, Rhiannon

The importance of agriculture

I must have some good karma coming my way because I got to join Pomona Elementary School students this morning as they fed ewes, ironically tried local lamb jerky, got up close and personal with sheep eyes, and met a loyal herding dog.

I even got a bag of wool as a souvenir that I hope to turn into yarn for a new crochet project.

If you want to learn about just how many animal byproducts you can find at the grocery store (some may surprise you) as well as why Pomona students got to experience these things, you can look for my coverage of the event early next week in the paper.
