Drost-Chacon supports students' academic success

Caring for man's best friend: Pets have proven to be a lifeline during the pandemic, providing comfort at a time when social interaction has been curtailed. But pets need care too, and that can be expensive. Ridgway Second Chance Humane Society has expanded its Community Medical program to include certain treatments to help more people who are struggling financially to be able to keep their pets well. Thursday Throwback: Love was in the air and the stomach as Bill and Iva Brattebo enjoyed a dinner after they won the Senior Sweethearts contest on this day in 2016. The Brattebo's enjoyed a dinner of lasagna, garlic bread, caesar salad and chocolate cheese cake. The contest allowed Montrose residents to enter any couple ages 65 or older by way of writing an essay of 150 words or less about the couple and submitting it to the Valley Manor Care Center. The Brattebo's daughter Cathy White wrote the winning essay. The meal was prepared by Valley Manor chef Mike Krull, and was presented with a dozen roses and dessert. Bill and Iva met when they were in kindergarten in a small Iowa farm town, staying together to be married when Bill returned home from World War II. Calving during a storm: Jo Stanko shares her calving experiences she has developed over the years from living in the high country where winter weather can move in quickly. We have gotten a lot of experience and fairly good success at saving calves following these principles. Miracle 7, decided to be born in the midst of a spring cold snap and snowstorm on April 1. Because we were calving when this storm hit, Pat and Jan were checking the calving grounds hourly. At 9:30 p.m., there was no sign of anyone working on a calf. When they returned at 10:30 p.m., they noticed a cow, which was out in the open rather than under the bluff or in the trees, was rolling something over and over. Hit the slopes: If you're like us, it can be hard to find a sense of normalcy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, Colorado offers various outdoor recreational activities year-round, including hitting the slopes.
