(Kurtis A. Hatcher/US Navy via Flickr) Single-dose vaccine almost approved: The FDA is reviewing Johnson and Johnson's single-dose vaccine. The vaccine advisory committee is convening today to discuss potential emergency use authorization. The company has said that they can manufacture 100,000,000 doses of the vaccine by the end of June. Unlike Pfizer and Moderna's two-dose mRNA vaccines, Johnson and Johnson's is not quite as effective in preventing moderate-to-severe infections. However, the vaccine is extremely effective in preventing severe cases that lead to hospitalization and death.
National minimum wage increase snags: An attempt to pass an increase in the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15. Democrats in Congress attempted to fold the measure into the broader $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill, but the Senate parliamentarian ruled yesterday that it could not be folded into the budget reconciliation process, which only requires a simple 51-vote majority instead of the usual 60-vote threshold needed in the Senate. However, some senators are still trying to make it happen with a 'Plan B' to penalize large corporations who do not pay their employees a living wage.
Colorado voters approved Amendment 70 in 2016, which incrementally increased the statewide minimum wage to $12 last year. It will be adjusted annually to account for increases in cost of living.
