Thursday Throwback: Laurie Brandt skijors at the Summit Challenge race on the Grand Mesa in 2014. Taking place at over 10,000-feet in elevation, it's the highest sled dog race in North America. I've grown up in Colorado for the majority of my life, but I never knew there was a dogsled race until I moved to the Western Slope. My husband had the opportunity to be part of an Iditarod team in Alaska during college and he said it was exhilarating. While I think that would be fun, wouldn't it be more exciting to be the musher? If you had the opportunity, would you participate in a dogsled race? Let us know at editor@montrosepress.com. This year's Grand Mesa Summit Challenge sled and skijor race has been rescheduled to February 27-28. The Grand Mesa Summit Challenge II sled and skijor race will be March 13-14.
Or maybe, he's best remembered as a driving force behind bringing the Russell Stover candy factory to town when he served as Montrose City manager. Or possibly, for his work at recruiting physicians to Montrose; or his support and nurturing of The Forum, the Civil Society, the Government Affairs Council of the CMU-Montrose Advisory Committee — any and all of the hats the Kansas native wore in 84 years of living.
Bodies found: Search teams have located the bodies of three people under about 20 feet of snow and debris from a Monday avalanche that swept down as they skied the backcountry between Silverton and Ouray. The victims had not been publicly identified as of Wednesday night; the San Juan County Coroner's Office will confirm identity once the bodies are transported.
QUICK LINKS Hit the slopes: If you're like us, it can be hard to find a sense of normalcy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, Colorado offers various outdoor recreational activities year-round, including hitting the slopes. Whether you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, the Montrose Daily Press is offering a set of two lift tickets to Powderhorn Mountain Resort and a $100 Visa gift card to one lucky new subscriber. |
