In this screenshot from NASA's highlight reel of the Perseverance rover landing on Mars, the rover touches down.

Landing on Mars: NASA's Mars Perseverance rover landed on the red planet Thursday. Here's a highlight reel NASA posted to YouTube.
Colorado aerospace companies were part of that mission to Mars. Lockheed Martin Space Systems built the aeroshell containing the car-sized Perseverance at its Jefferson County complex.

The machine will travel to the Jezero Crater to explore where there was once water. On it's journey, Perseverance will capture photos of the planet's surface. One of the first pictures it captured and transmitted back to Earth is at the right.

Mars to Earth comparison:
  • Distance from Sun: Mars 142 millions of miles and Earth 93 millions of miles
  • Deepest canyon: Mars' Valles Marineris 4.35 miles deep and Earth's Grand Canyon 1.1 miles deep
  • Diameter: Mars 4,220 miles and Earth 7,926 miles
  • Length of day: Mars 24.37 hours and Earth 23:56 hours
  • Highest mountain: Mars' Olympus Mons 16 miles and Earth's Mauna Kea 6.34 miles
  • Temperature: Mars -81 degrees F and Earth 57 degrees F (average)

State of the state: Though Gov. Jared Polis brought up a number of topics during the speech, a few in particular aligned with the potential future of Montrose. One of those has been a hot topic in recent months: affordable housing.
Montrose's push for affordable housing dates back to at least 2016, when a household community survey, featuring input from the community, revealed multi-family housing was one of the highest priorities.

Montrose murder case:
In 2007, a teenager was arrested — and ultimately pleaded guilty to attempted murder — after attacking another student at Montrose High School.
At the time, information about the crime, including the teen's name, were readily available through public records.
This past December, an 11-year-old was accused of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Karmen Keefauver, 62. Details are sparse, including his identity.
That's because the law pertaining to juvenile suspects and offenders changed in 2017. Where before in Colorado, a juvenile's name was releasable to the public and media depending on the nature of the crime he or she was accused of committing and whether a deadly weapon was used, there are now more restrictions on what the custodians of those records can release.
