Good afternoon! Some big news out of the baseball world released this morning. The Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball announced a name change — after this season, they'll be the Cleveland Guardians.

The organization announced last December that it would move forward with a new name and mascot, moving away from the "Indians" moniker. This came after the NFL's Washington Football Team, previously the Washington Redskins, said it would find a new name.

As most of you already know, Montrose County School District announced Montrose High School, home of the Montrose Indians, will have a new mascot. Staff Writer Anna Lynn Winfrey reported on a rough timeline for the mascot swap.

It's the latest in a trend of organizational announcements, both on the professional and amateur levels, to move away from mascots deemed racist and offensive. MCSD's Centennial Braves will also have a name change after Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill into law that officially bans Native American mascots in Colorado public schools. If schools do not comply by June 1, 2022, they must pay a $25,000 monthly fee.

There's been pressure towards MLB's Atlanta Braves to change their name. This announcement by Cleveland could add to that pressure.

It's time for fresh produce!: As you probably heard, it's corn and peach harvest time, and there are roadside produce stands all over town. This is Bob Stollsteimer, a volunteer with Sharing Ministries' produce stand. This morning, he was dealin' fresh Olathe Sweet sweet corn with his wife and fellow volunteer, Fran. Ronda Steenburgen, a board member with Sharing Ministries, was also there. If you get a hankerin' for some Olathe Sweet, head over to their stand, near the corner of South Townsend and Montrose Drive.

Hitting the green: MHS golfers Noah Richmond (left) and Connor Bell did what they do best, and qualified for the American Junior Golf Association golf tournament that starts Aug. 1. Oh, and recent 4A state champ Jordan Jennings qualified, too.

There's been a ton of great golf talent to come through Montrose in recent years, and these three have added to that portfolio. I'm confident the 2021 group will continue the success the team has had as of late.

Attention fall MHS athletes:
Fall athletic/activities registration will take place Aug. 2 — 4 at the MHS activities office, from 8 a.m. - noon, and 1 - 4 p.m. on each day.

CHSAA switched the way to register, so each athlete/family needs to visit montrose-ar.rschooltoday.com and click on the large red icon in the middle of the page. Once a profile is complete, athletes can come on one of the days listed, register and receive a yellow slip to start practice Monday, Aug. 8.

If you have any questions or need more information, call the MHS activities office at 970-240-6413.

Also, the Montrose High School girls tennis team is hosting a fundraiser tennis camp from Aug. 2 — 5. All grade levels are welcome, and each day, grades K - 5 will go from 8 - 9:30 a.m., and grades 6 - 8 from 9:30 - 11 a.m.

I covered the 2021 group extensively this past spring, and it's clear the sport is growing here locally. The players were excited to just be a part of the team, playing on the court, and I'm sure they'll pass that energy to camp participants in a few weeks.
