Ready for the long weekend? We are.

I wanted to start by giving you a little information about a very important piece of legislation. It's called the Journalism Sustainability Act. It is gaining steam in Congress, and if it passes, it will help newspapers and other press organizations through tax credits. If you have the time, make it known to our House representative that you'd like to see this legislation passed. It would help us in a lot of different ways, including assisting us in hiring and keeping staff.

Accidental deaths:
We are saddened again by tragic deaths in our area. On Thursday, a teenager from Hawaii flipped his UTV on Elk Creek Road in San Miguel County. Nobody saw the accident, but people came upon the aftermath, and multiple agencies attempted to save the boy, 15-year-old Dylan Collins. And early Friday, a Texas man fell or accidentally walked off a loft space at a hunting cabin near Egnar, also in San Miguel County. Paul Park, 53, could not be revived after falling to the first floor. Our sympathies go out to their families and friends.

Classic car fun: If you like classic cars, mom-and-pop shops and watching new movies at an old-fashioned drive-in, go over to the Star Drive-In Saturday. Drivers will be displaying their vintage cars and hot rods at 5 p.m. at Crash Burger on East Main before heading over to the Star for a showing of "F9," the latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise.

Weed keeps American out of Olympic event: Sha'Carri Richardson, a 21-year-old sprinter from Dallas, was a strong contender to win the 100-meter dash at the Olympic trials this month before she tested positive for cannabis. She ran a 10.72 in April, and if she would have gone on to win, she would have been the first American to earn the gold in that event since 1996. The 21-year-old will now have to wait another 4 years before she gets another chance.

Lastly, here's a rundown of Fourth of July events in our area. Have a safe and happy weekend!
