Good afternoon everyone! It's Josue here, and I hope everyone had a fun, safe Fourth of July. Our local fireworks were great, and residents in Forth Worth enjoyed a hell of a show, with a minor scare at the end. Wait for it... Here's a quick rundown on a pair of today's stories:
A worthy cause: The Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center is the new beneficiary of all proceeds for jewelry sold at The Green Cupboard. "I don't think I could be more grateful. I think it's an amazing opportunity for the Dolphin House," the center's director, Michelle Gottlieb, said.
Freedom ride: Dozens of local cyclists joined organizers with the Montrose Area Bicycle Alliance last week for a ride around town. "It was great to see people dressed up in red, white and blue," MABA organizer Jeff Rice said.
Best of the best: A pair of local athletes competed at the All-State Game for girls basketball Thursday, July 1 at Massari Arena, home of the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves, in Pueblo. Mariah Garcia (left), representing Olathe, and Jaycie Casebolt (right), a Montrose rep, both played for the White team.
Garcia led the Pirates in scoring this season, averaging 12.8 points. Her 2021 performance earned her an All-State honorable mention and she was also named Athlete of the Week. Casebolt, too, was an Athlete of the Week, and after finishing the campaign averaging 10.7 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds, Casebolt earned a first-team SWL All-Conference selection.
In case you missed it: Staff Writer Anna Lynn Winfrey reported on what the timeline looks like for the mascot change for Montrose High School and Centennial Middle School. The process for community input is tentatively slated to start this winter, but that could change.
Swingin' for Blake Street: Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story will compete in the 2021 Home Run Derby at Coors Field in Denver on Monday, July 11.
The last Rockies player to participate in the derby was Charlie Blackmon in 2017 at Marlins Park in Miami.
And, during the derby at Coors Field in 1998, Rockies legend Vinny Castilla hit 12 homers to lead all National League hitters. But Ken Griffey Jr., with his sweet, sweet swing, won it all, at Coors.
