Good afternoon, Montrose! When I first heard about last night's open house event about wolf reintroduction on the Western Slope, I was expecting something like the public feedback sessions on the TV show Parks and Recreation— or even the room full of Cobble Creek residents at the city council meeting last month — but this event was anything but that.

People engaged in constructive conversations with employees from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, as well as representatives from the non-partisan Keystone Policy Center. It was refreshing to see so many lively face-to-face conversations in the same room after so many Zoom meetings in the past year!

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland is in Colorado! She was in Denver today and is visiting Grand Junction tomorrow, along with Gov. Polis, Senators Micheal Bennet and John Hickenlooper, Representatives Lauren Boebert and Joe Neguse.

She will also be in Ridgway on Saturday to talk about Colorado's outdoor economy. We'll have boots on the ground at both events. What do you want to know from her? Let us know! Reply to this email with your question.

Will masks be required in Montrose schools? I spoke with district superintendent Carrie Stephenson yesterday and she told me that Montrose's policies are still in the works, but will be announced sometime next week.

In the state's guidelines released this Tuesday, masks are recommended, but not required, for unvaccinated individuals. School districts and local public health agencies have final jurisdiction over what to do.

Delta and Mesa County schools had announced that they will not be requiring masks in the upcoming school year before the guidelines from the state were released.

Keep your eyes peeled for a full article next week about the COVID rules in schools!
