Good afternoon! It's Josue with today's newsletter.

As many of you already know, Montrose High School's football team is 5-0 at the halfway mark of the season. The team has played exceptionally well with numerous contributions on both sides of the ball.

Tomorrow, Montrose will play another 5-0 squad Palmer Ridge. It's a highly anticipated matchup between two top 4A teams and league rivals. Palmer Ridge is ranked No. 1 in 4A and Montrose is No. 4.

I asked a few players and Montrose head coach Brett Mertens about the upcoming matchup and the message was the same the team is ready and excited for Friday night's game, which starts at 6 p.m.

You can read more about the matchup between Montrose and Palmer Ridge here.

Former school board member returns: The MCSD school board unanimously appointed Tom West to fill the vacant District D seat during a work session earlier this week.

West previously served on the school board from 2011 to 2019 and taught at MCSD schools for 33 years.

Five other school board seats are up for grabs in the election this November, so my colleague Anna Lynn Winfrey has been following the upcoming school board elections closely. You can read more of her coverage here.

Episode 3: Mo-Town Knows returns with Episode 3 tonight as staff writer Cassie Knust sits down with Hispanic Affairs Project leaders Ricardo Perez and Karen Sherman Perez, and Bebe Byrd of the Olathe Language Connection, to discuss Hispanic Heritage Month and issues surrounding the immigrant and Hispanic communities in Montrose.

The live stream starts at 6 p.m. and can be accessed on our website, Youtube, NABUR and Facebook.

You can watch the first two episodes here.

Make-A-Wish 12/12: Montrose is testing out a pilot program from the Make-A-Wish foundation, called Make-A-Wish 12/12, which allows people to donate on a monthly, automated basis for different donation amounts.

Montrose will serve as the "test" community for this new program. Read more about the program and its goals in Cassie's story.

Montrose trivia: Last weekend was a special one for Rockies fans at Coors Field as the Colorado Rockies retired Larry Walker's number, just weeks after Walker's induction ceremony into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The first person to answer this trivia question correctly will receive a Larry Walker bobblehead that was given out to fans before last Saturday's game. Send your answer to josuep@montrosepress.com.

In 1997, as a member of the Rockies, Walker was named the National League's Most Valuable Player. How many home runs did he hit that season?

What other public spaces in Montrose need an upgrade?

The tiny strip of walkable space between San Juan Construction and Synergy One Lending is due for improvements, according to the city. As long as the city receives the state department of transportation grant they're applying for, the changes will go through.

With the scheduled renovations in mind, do you think there are any other public spaces around Montrose that need a similar upgrade?

Hi and hello! Cassie here with your daily newsletter curation. I hope your Tuesday is a good one.

There's a lot going on this week, but I want to slow down and take a moment to highlight Montrose resident Katie Spatafore.

Katie is a young mother of two daughters with an extremely rare disease known as Tarlov Cyst Disease. The disease causes extreme muscle weakness and mobility issues for Katie, who can't remain in one position for more than 30 minutes due to the several cysts located on her spine which leave her in constant pain. As a result, she hardly sleeps and can't work.

Katie was diagnosed back in January and discovered only two doctors in the world can operate on a Tarlov cyst, but the only specialist world-wide is Dr. Frank Feigenbaum, who agreed to perform the surgery pro-bono where he practices in Dallas, Texas. Katie and her husband, Nic, are still responsible for the $22,000 hospital stay.

Katie is fundraising for the cost of her trip to Texas with a deadline set for February 2022 by the operating surgeon. Her GoFundMe can be found here. Please spread the word!

Keep an eye out for the full story tomorrow.

Secretary of State is visiting Montrose today: I'll have the chance to sit down and chat with Secretary Jena Griswold later this afternoon to talk more about her campaign efforts, goals for her next term if re-elected and election security in the Western Slope.

Griswold has recently been in the news for her lawsuit filed to remove Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters from overseeing the upcoming election.

School board candidates publicly discussed issues: Seven of the running candidates met publicly for the first time last Thursday to discuss both controversial and non-controversial issues related to their platforms. Critical Race Theory, government mandates and comprehensive sex education are just a few topics that came up during the meeting.

More info: Candidates will be speaking tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the weekly Wednesday Forum on the CMU campus.

What are some trails in the forests that need work?
The forest service will be working (or has already started working) on Dallas Trail, Coal Creek Trail, Sun Park Trail and Trail Riders Trail. The projects "focus on improving conditions on forest and rangelands, reducing wildfire risk and increasing the resiliency of our nation's forests for present and future generations."

Are there any trails in the GMUG forests that you think could use some future work?
