Concerns rise for Crystal Lake Dam Crack

Image

Happy Tuesday evening!

In a refreshing moment of good news, Delta County recently united in support of six-year-old Cortez Bell and his family as they navigate Cortez's battle with aplastic anemia.

Here's Cortez tuning in from Denver to watch a dodgeball fundraiser for his benefit.

In an effort to help Cortez, Delta High School (as part of Wish Week) dedicated part of its recent dodgeball tournament to the Paonia K-8 student.

The game raised over $3,000, with additional funds pouring in from Paonia K-8 and North Fork High School.

Check out DCI reporters Lucas and Frank's story on Cortez here!

Now onto today's news roundup.

Concerns rise for Crystal Lake dam crack; full moon dam removal not planned

Image

The U.S. Forest Service is dealing with a concerning issue up at the Crystal Reservoir near Ouray.

It seems there's a crack in the Full Moon Dam, and it's got folks worried about safety. Right now, they're thinking of lowering the water levels to ease the pressure. But down the line, they're talking about big decisions like possibly taking the dam out altogether.

The Montrose airport is getting a temporary traffic signal

Since its terminal expansion last fall, Montrose Regional Airport has seen a surge in passenger traffic, hitting its second-best month on record in February.

Pretty soon, airport visitors will have an added safety measure in the form of a traffic signal. Airport officials say this temporary signal will ease the transition for those leaving and entering the airport.

After nearly a decade of losses, the Montrose girls soccer team broke their streak with a gritty 2-1 win over Durango!

This victory is the first at Durango since 2014, and marks a turning point for the Red Hawks.

Congrats, Red Hawks!

What's happening?

It seems the stars have aligned because we're once again talking about the cosmos.

Montrose has a slate of cosmic events coming up this week, starting with a free concert from Dust City Opera on Thursday at the Montrose Pavilion. Reporter Kylea Henseler gave us a preview this week of the band, whose fans describe their tracks as "cosmic trauma rock, grunge folk and gothic country."

And of course we have the sweet "Celestial Sounds" on Sunday, a free concert by the Montrose Community Band, at the Montrose Pavilion. Bring your eclipse glasses and join the band for an afternoon dedicated to the stars, planets and outer space!

All this leads to the main event, which is, of course, Monday's solar eclipse. Colorado will only see a partial solar eclipse starting around 11:30 a.m. (with max partial eclipse at 12:41 p.m. in Fort Collins).

The eclipse will end around 1:30 p.m. If you want to join your fellow earthlings in a noontime eclipse viewing, check out Centennial Plaza! From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., the plaza will host "Get Mooned at Centennial Plaza: An Alien Disco."

There will be live music, food trucks, turns at a solar telescope from Black Canyon Astronomical Society, activities for the kiddos and free eclipse-viewing glasses (while supplies last). Disco, alien or disco-alien costumes are definitely encouraged.

Check out more events on our calendar page.

With that in mind, I encourage you to hop on over to NABUR and share what's on your mind: What is important to you? What isn't important to you? What are you excited for/hesitant about? Let us know!
