Is Montrose due a new charter school? Though it's still in the very early phases, a local group is exploring the potential for establishing a new charter school in Montrose. Kay Alexander, a former state legislator, is heading up the effort and a pair of public meetings aimed at assessing community interest are scheduled for next week. The charter, Montrose Classical Academy, is registered as a non-profit and its founding team is laying out plans for a classical-based curriculum. According to MCSD Superintendent Carrie Stephenson, the path to establishing a charter is a lengthy one: first there's the application process, then the approval or denial from the school board. "Developing a charter school is a really big task, and they will have a lot of work ahead of them," Stephenson said. But Alexander is no stranger to local education discussions and debates — she founded Children First, which has actively pushed for school board candidates who are conservative and support alternative forms of education, such as a charter school — and could be well equipped to explore the potential for a charter. We'll see. To read more ahead of next week's community meetings, see our story here. Have a Good One, Jeremy Morrison, managing editor QUICK LINKS |
