Happy April! Can you believe it? It's April! Some people call it "the cruelest month," but it is my favorite, because I associate it with my favorite blooms, like flowering dogwood and (later) lilacs. Today is also April Fools' Day, as my pals' social media posts reminded me! It took me back to the days when the Daily Press put out a parody edition on April 1, loaded with what we thought were obvious jokes, although there was always someone who initially took at least one of them seriously. Picking on my late father here, but I remember him demanding to know "what kind of place do you live?!" the time we put out that a strip club was coming to Montrose. Keep in mind, he'd just looked at a Photoshopped image of a space shuttle at the Montrose airport and did not so much as pause to think. He was relieved to realize it was a joke, although probably not all that amused by the way I laughed. April Fools' origins may stretch as far back as the 1500s, when parts of Europe switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. Some folks didn't get the memo, and so, continued marking the new year at the start of April, instead of January, thus earning the title "April Fools," or so the story goes. And you thought the twice annual time change was bad! (There are also ancient festivals thought to have inspired April Fools' Day.) Anyway, here are some small laughs from today. (Thank you, OCSO) "In an effort to reduce speeding on our county roads, the Ouray County Sheriff's Office has enlisted the help of our resident mule deer. Since mule deer are naturally found along our roadways, and at all times of the day and night, it was an easy decision to choose them as our newest partners. Training is currently ongoing to teach the mule deer how to slow drivers down without running directly into a vehicle, risking their own life and damaging property. It's an ongoing effort, but we are excited to see how this new project unfolds. Please be on the lookout for these new traffic safety team members in the coming weeks!"
