Good evening friends, Call me crazy but...I'm loving the cooler weather. It makes for a pleasant stroll around town. While we're here, do you have any events, photos or shout outs you want shared in our next newsletter? Let me know! For now, let's get to the news. - Cassie GMUG Forest Service bought Ouray's dinosaur trackway site Today I learned that Ouray is home to the world's largest continuous dinosaur trackway. If you were to follow these tracks, you would walk through 134 consecutive tracks imprinted nearly 150 million years ago by a single long-neck sauropod dinosaur. So cool. Last week, GMUG acquired the nearly 27 acres of land in efforts to protect this trackway. It previously was privately-owned, and while the dino tracks certainly aren't new news to many, it will soon be open to the public. Concerns arise over funding shortfall for Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) VOCA is facing a critical funding shortfall, and it's prompting worries among agencies and nonprofits within the 7th Judicial District. Projections indicate potential cuts of approximately 41% in victim services grants for Fiscal Year 2024. According to Katharhynn Heidelberg's recent reporting, this raised some alarms for organizations like the Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center. VOCA funds constitute a significant portion of their budgets, and impending cuts threaten to disrupt essential services for crime victims. Rural education is getting a funding boost for career pathways Schools in our region, including Montrose County School District and others in the Western Slope Schools Career Collaborative (WSSCC), recently received a portion of nearly $3 million in grant funding. The grant aims to support career-connected learning for over 10,000 students across Colorado, placing more emphasis on education's role in workforce development. It's Earth Week! There's quite a bit happening in Montrose this week as we celebrate our beautiful planet. The City's theme this year is "Invest in Montrose." Check out this week's City-sponsored events here, from the 18th annual Earth Day Coloring Contest to all the local businesses contributing to sustainable products and services. Hit the road, Jack...it's Adventure Film time You can experience the thrill of extreme sports, breathtaking landscapes and pretty impressive human feats without even leaving your seat at The Temple Events here in Montrose. We here at the Montrose Daily Press are sponsoring the 5 Point Adventure Film Festival On the Road event, along with Montrose Regional Health. Tickets are $15, we'll see you there! Did I mention there will be food, drinks and swag? We're accepting "Thank you" letters and notes for our newsletters! This new section, "Our Community Cares" is the perfect place to include your notes of gratitude that may not fit in our Letters to the Editor section. Email your notes to me at cassiek@montrosepress.com and I'll include it in our next newsletter. We may edit for length and clarity. Thank you to Shelley of Montrose, who sent us this note last week and inspired this new section: "Thank you, THANK YOU, to all who helped move out from Unit 109 on Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9, and clear out hundreds, if not thousands, of books and almost twenty glass-front bookcases, furniture, household goods, kitchenware, and other items. The five-person team at the Montrose Public Library was invaluable, including Jolene, Phyllis, Julie, Liz, and Larry. The team of Jim Renfrow, Ken from Flairmont Furniture and Bobbie; Walter R, John B, and Tiffany and her staff and the residents at the facility have been absolutely amazing in helping with this enormous project. Gratitude to one and all for the amazing amount of work accomplished." - Shelley Green, Montrose Keep an eye out for the "Our Community Cares" graphic on NABUR and Facebook. This is an invitation to share with our community! Let's talk more on NABUR! As a news organization, it's our duty to inform. That said, news is made richer by the communities it represents. With that in mind, I encourage you to hop on over to NABUR and share what's on your mind: What is important to you? What isn't important to you? What are you excited for/hesitant about? Let us know! You can email us at editor@montrosepress.com or me directly at cassiek@montrosepress.com As always, stay in the loop on events around town by visiting our calendar page. |
