Grateful for that slow-rolling cloud of dust ...

Grateful for that slow-rolling cloud of dust ... but I'd rather a teleporter!

Since last week, the route between Montrose and Gunnison along U.S. 50 has been severed, with CDOT declaring that the Middle Bridge spanning Blue Mesa is closed after an inspection revealed a crack in the structure. This is a big deal!

Drivers between Montrose and Gunnison have grown accustomed to travel inconveniences after years of road work on this stretch of 50 has led to limited and controlled travel along the route. Now, the closed Middle Bridge means no travel along a stretch of 50 and over the Blue Mesa.

When the bridge closure was first announced, alternate routes to the north and south turned an hour trek into a six-to-eight hour excursion. Thankfully, a much more manageable alternate route has been opened — County Road 26. This unpaved rural route is not fast and not convenient — and it's only offered twice a day, each way — but it is so much quicker and more convenient than the previous routes.

I traveled from Gunnison to Montrose via CR 26 yesterday, the first day the route was opened. It's slow moving and the dust cloud is thick, but really, it's not that bad. Rough estimate, it about doubles the trip — barely longer than in the thick of that road construction.

Alright, I may be grasping for a silver lining here. This bridge is probably gonna be out a while. Anyone know how I can get my hands on a teleporter?
