SOME LITTLE DANCERS visited assisted living facilities over the weekend to spread some cheer. The "Time to Dance" crew previewed some stuff from their upcoming recital based on the movie The Greatest Showman. A READER WROTE US about the Montrose High School mascot. As most of you know, the Montrose Indians have been so named for a long time. This isn't the first time the Montrose High School mascot has come under scrutiny. There was a grassroots effort in 2002 to change mascots of schools across the state. Montrose was included in that discussion. The Indians, as far as we can tell, don't run students in headdresses out on the field, but it's still a sensitive topic for many Native Americans today. Above is a photo of the 1997 Montrose football team gathered around a totem pole, which is currently located behind the north end of the football field. Related, a piece from the Sports Illustrated vault was published in 2002. It might make you think a little more about the topic. Also related, in 1972, it appears Stanford University might have been the first to do away with the Indians mascot.
