POKER RUN FOR VETS: After participating in a joint poker run on the Western Slope, the American Legion Riders from Post 73 and Post 24 and the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association Chapter 3-8 presented the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans with a check for $1,550 on Thursday.
All $1,550 will go to the Warrior Resource Center.
The poker run took place on June 13 with 60 bikes supporting the effort. Groups from as far as Colorado Springs participated.

BUDGETING SCHOOL: Montrose County School District has budgeted $1.1 million in deficit spending from the district's fund balance after Gov. Jared Polis signed a $30 billion budget earlier this week.
The adopted 2020-21 budget includes just under 6% state revenue cuts in the amount of approximately $2.6 million less in state funding than last year. But what does that mean? Lauren Brant broke down the district's budget and spoke with the district about cost savings measures they are implementing to account for the revenue loss from the state.

SECOND SUIT FILED AGAINST TENDER HEARTS PRESCHOOL:
A baby boy was so traumatized by the abuse he suffered at a now-closed daycare that his mother is unable to leave him with a third party, a new lawsuit against Tender Hearts Preschool alleges.
Patricia Garcia brought the suit on behalf of her infant son, naming the preschool; its owner Deborah Martinez and childcare worker Carolina Jaramillo.
The suit alleges negligence; battery; negligent administration of a childcare facility; negligent infliction of emotional distress, and extreme and outrageous conduct.
The complaint was filed in April, at which time, the courts were closed to public access because of COVID-19 restrictions. A return of service was filed June 22. A response has not yet been filed.

OVER EASY: Can you fry an egg on the sidewalk? A New York relative of Bob Allen, who lives in Green Valley, asked him about that. So, on a 103-degree day, he tried it at home. The results are above. (Advice: Don't eat that, Bob!)
According to Southern Living, it can be done but it takes 158 degrees for an egg to cook through. A sidewalk can typically hit 145. If you want a bit more science, here's a Smithsonian Magazine story on it. It's worth looking at if for nothing other than the 1933 photo of four guys with awesome shoes.
(I stole this from the editor at the Green Valley News in Arizona, one of our sister papers).

CHECK OUT THE DEALS: I keep pushing this because it's really a cool feature. But check out our interactive classifieds section on our website. You may find something you need (or something you didn't know you needed).
