THE MONTROSE BOTANIC GARDENS is now open to visitors. Check out this photo essay by Lauren Brant, capturing some of the beautiful blooms that can be seen there now. There are some social distancing precautions for those who do go to check out the gardens. PLAY BALL! We wrote in one of these newsletters last week that the Major League Baseball season might not happen, but players and owners have reached a deal. The season will begin July 23 or 24, and the schedule will be bizarre to those familiar with the game. Instead of the normal 162-game regular season, the word is that teams will play a shortened 60-game campaign, only competing with their own division and the corresponding division in the opposite league. So, the Rockies will play their normal National League West opponents: the Diamondbacks, Giants, Padres and Dodgers. But they'll also play plenty of games against the American League West: The Astros, Rangers, Athletics, Mariners and Angels. For a sport that rarely plays interleague games, it's going to make for an interesting Rockies season (one of the new rules is universal designated hitters). We're just glad baseball is almost back, but it's worth noting that some 40 MLB players have tested positive for the coronavirus, including Rockies superstar outfielder Charlie Blackmon. A STATEWIDE SURVEY FOR RESTAURANTS revealed rampant pessimism for the future of dining out. Restaurants are worried they may not be able to stay in business if certain restrictions are left in place. Locally, restaurants like Colorado Boy and The Stonehouse report sales are still much lower than normal but that momentum has picked up slightly since some restrictions have been loosened. | |
